Info

(Cuvier, 1828)

At first quick glance, the endemic Hypoplectrodes nigroruber can easily be mistaken for the wrasses Pseudolabrus semifasciatus or Pseudolabrus torotai.
The sawfish is a loner on the reef and is adept at preying on unwary small fish.
However, the perch will usually only be observed by divers with scuba tanks, as these animals mostly reside below 30 meters in protected, offshore reefs.

Hypoplectrodes nigroruber is a red to brown or yellowish-gray, becoming white below, sawfish with four darker red to blackish bands over the posterior half of the body and often 5. short stripe from gill cover to dorsal fin base.
The upper teril of the head and body are densely mottled with irregular dark spots, the posterior margin of the gill cover is yellow, and the fin rays are mottled.
Juvenile sawfish are often whitish with black bands.
