Neoturris pileata (Forsskål, 1775)

Very special thanks for the first photo of Neoturris pileata to Nicholas Samaras, Greece.

Neoturris pileata is a small hydromedusa that reaches a total length of up to 4 cm.

The stomach cavity is particularly striking and the bright red gonads are clearly visible through the transparent blue umbrella.
A yellow-orange line runs around the umbrella of the medusa.

Variation: Certain features of the adult medusa show considerable variation.
The apical process can vary greatly in size: it can be a large, almost spherical mass that makes up over a third of the medusa's total height, or it can be completely absent.
The stomach also varies considerably in length, in some it extends almost to the edge of the umbrella, while in others it is not even half the height of the subumbrellar cavity.

Edwards (1965) provides an overview of all records of the medusa. The polyp stage is known from western Scotland, Norway and Sweden. The preferred host of the polyp phase, Nucula sulcata Bronn, 1831, has a similar distribution to the medusa of Neoturris pileata (Edwards, 1965). Type locality: Mediterranean.

Neoturris pileata differs from N. breviconis in the more slender shape of the umbrella, the higher number of interradial pits, and the lower number of tentacles (Arai & Brinckmann-Voss, 1980).

Neoturris pileata lives as part of the plankton.
