Info

During a research expedition on the rocky Atlantic coast of Gabon in 2017, three individuals of a small shrimp species were found that clearly belonged to the genus Cinetorhynchus.

One of them was a female about 2 cm long, the specimens are morphologically very similar to Cinetorhynchus manningi, but the adults are much smaller and differ in coloration.

Since color pattern is one of the diagnostic characters in this genus (Baeza et al. 2014), it was suspected that these specimens belonged to an undescribed species.

The overall coloration of the shrimp consists of dark red spots densely arranged in irregular bands, interrupted by narrow white oblique lines and dots interspersed.
Two small white spots with a red ring around each of them are located on the highest point of the third pleomere.

Naming:
The species name "gabonensis" was derived from the name of the Gabonese Republic, a country on the west coast of central Africa in whose marine waters the new species was collected.
