Heterozius rotundifrons A. Milne-Edwards, 1867
Heterozius rotundifrons, or Big-hand crab, is a species of crab of the family Belliidae, endemic to New Zealand. The carapace width is up to 25 mm. A number of scientific studies have been conducted on this species so it is by far and way the best known.
The Big-hand crab lives in the intertidal zone, sheltering under rocks.
Diet of H.rotundifrons comprised algae (60.7%), crustaceans (19.6%), sand & unidentified materials (11.7%), sponges & worms (5.7%), and molluscs (2.3%). Although brown algae were always the single dominant food item, diet composition varied seasonally.
Similar to Ozius deplanatus, Pilumnus sp. and Pilumnopeus serratifrons.
