Info

The holotype of Calcigorgia gigantea is from Tanaga Pass, west of Tanaga Island, Andreanof Islands, Aleutian Islands, Bering Sea.
The holotype was 7 cm wide and 10 cm high, the peduncle was 2 cm long and about 6 mm wide, the polyps are about 9-10 mm high and 5-6 mm wide.

The paratypes were from Amchitka Pass, Rat Islands, Aleutian Islands, depth 347-391 meters and from Semisopochnoi Island, Rat Islands, Aleutian Islands, Western Bering Sea, depth 128-135 meters on 24 June 2000.

Calcigorgia gigantea is unique in the genus due to its large polyps and sclerites.

Etymology. The species name "gigantea" is derived from Latin and means "huge or very large", in reference to the large polyps and sclerites.
