Info

Cardites rufus (Deshayes, 1833)

Cardites rufus is a species of mussel in the Cardita family. Several jellyfish state that Cardites rufus is an endemic species, native only to the Mediterranean, but there is also evidence that the mussel has now been found in the Mediterranean and is therefore listed as an invasive species.

Cardita is a genus of marine bivalve molluscs from the family Carditidae. Carditidae is a family of marine bivalves of the order Carditida, which for a long time belonged to the Venerida family.
They are the type taxon of the superfamily Carditoidea.

Carditidae is a neglected and poorly classified family. There are six subfamilies recognized by the World Register of Marine Species, but WoRMS has refrained from assigning content to a family due to ambiguities and overlaps in their definitions.
In addition, several genera have been or are considered by some authors to be subgenera of other genera.
