Info
The brown alga Zonaria farlowii is one of 12 species of the genus Zonaria, a predominantly tropical genus.
The fan-shaped thallus forms lobes edged with a thin white stripe, the lobes can grow up to 25cm tall and resemble a cabbage or certain succulents.
Zonaria farlowii is found along the California coast from Santa Barbara to San Diego and lives in shallow waters and tide pools.
The alga is hardy enough to survive buried under sand for several months; it is commonly attached to rocks in the lower intertidal zone, but is also found in tidal pools and frequently in areas influenced by sand.
In the U.S., a scientific test was conducted with a brown algae diet of cows that resulted in a reduction in the amount of methane excreted.
