Xiphophora gladiatais native to the temperate regions of Australia and New Zealand, including around the Snares Islands (Tini Heke) south of New Zealand's South Island and around the Antipodes Islands, which lie about 770 km southeast of New Zealand in the South Pacific.
The edible brown alga lives in the low intertidal zone and forms a distinct stripe on exposed coasts, just below low tide
Older plants can be very slimy!
