Soft coral localities: Chile,
Bernardo, Isla van der Meulen fjord, March 28, 2005.
Canal Messier, Puerto Eden/ Isla Pedro, on boulders of various sizes, moderate slope, depth 26 meters, April 2005.
Paso del Abismo, steep/overhanging wall, high diversity, depth 25 meters, March 10, 2006.
Seno Waldemar, slope/wall, some terraces, patches of high diversity, depth 25 meters, March 5, 2006;
Grupo Dacres, large steps with slight overhangs, high diversity, strong current convection, depth 15 meters deep, March 7, 2006.
The holotype of Alcyonium roseum was about 20 cm long and about 1 mm thick, and completely overgrew the axis of a dead gorgonian.
The polyps were unevenly distributed throughout the colony; they were concentrated on the lobes where they were close together.
The calyxes were dome-shaped and most polyps were retracted; the few extended polyps were up to 2 mm high and 1.5 mm wide; all polyps had retracted tentacles.
Color. The color of living colony is pinkish.
Species was regularly found on biogenic substrates (e.g., dead gorgonians, polychaete tubes) occurring on moderately steep or vertical rocky substrates below 15 m depth in the channels of the central Patagonian zone in the Chilean fjord region.
At these sites, currents were moderate to strong and sedimentation was relatively low.
Colonies may completely or only partially overgrow dead gorgonians.
Etymology. The species name "roseum" is the Latin word for "pink," and refers to the color of the colony.
