Acanthozoon fuscobulbosum Dixit, Sivaperuman & Raghunathan, 2018
The genus Acanthozoon have small raised papillae on the dorsum and ruffled edges. Their body is elongate and oval. They have smallear-like pseudo-tentacles. Because of their papillaed upper surface, they are easily confused with Thysanozoon flatworms.Flatworms genus Acanthozoon have only a single male copulative organ contrary to Thysanozoon (have two).
Acanthozoon flatworms live in warm tropical marine waters. They are benthic and carnivorous.
Acanthozoon fuscobulbosum is light yellow. The rim is darker with a pink tinge and has a border of small transverse white lines. The dorsal surface is covered with numerous brown and tuberous papillae of various sizes. The density of the papillae is greater near the edges and sparser in the central raised area.
The pseudotentacles are erect and black with white tips. Cerebral eye cluster and tentacle-shaped eyes are present only on the lower half of the pseudotentacles. Body small, oval and the rim without ruffles.
The presence of dorsal papillae, a single male copulatory apparatus with armed penis, and marginal tentacles with eyespots places this newly described species in the genus Acanthozoon of the family Pseudocerotidae. The newly described species differs from all members of the family in the structure and color of the papillae.
The species name "fuscobulbosum" refers to the presence of brown papillae; fuscus (adj.) = brown, bulbosum = bulbous (for bulbous papillae).
Similar to: Acanthozoon indicum,Acanthozoon lepidum,Acanthozoon marginatum, Acanthozoon obscurum, Acanthozoon ovale und Acanthozoon plehni.
