Info

Cactosoma arenarium Carlgren, 1931

Cactosoma arenarium is a sea anemone of the Halcampidae family. Members of this family are terrestrial, solitary, and carnivorous. They can reproduce both sexually and asexually. In addition, they are able to move around if necessary and seek a new, better location.

Cactosoma arenarium is colloquially known as Spiny Anemone. The genus Cactosoma currently contains only 4 scientifically described species:
Cactosoma abyssorum Danielssen, 1890
Cactosoma Arenarium Carlgren, 1931
Cactosoma asperum (Stephenson, 1918)
Cactosoma chilense (McMurrich, 1904)

The prickly anemone is quite small at a maximum of 7.5 cm and quickly retreats into the ground if disturbed.
