Info

Psenes pellucidus is a dark brown to violet-black galeoid fish with dark blue eyes and an elongated, compressed, flaccid body with a blunt snout and forked tail.
The pelagic juveniles are silvery-blue translucent with broad dark blue bands along the dorsal and anal fins.
The first dorsal fin is dark in juveniles.

This widespread species is associated with jellyfish, often occurs in floating algae fields, and exhibits daily vertical migrations.

Psenes pellucidus is regularly parasitized by the copepod Sarcotretes longirostris Ho, Nagasawa & Kim I.H., 2007.

Etymology: The species name “pellucidus” is derived from the Latin pellucidus (= transparent, clear) and refers to the almost transparent juveniles of this species.

Our special thanks for this great photo go to Roger Steene, who captured some juvenile fish together with a jellyfish off Panama, Caribbean, in front of his camera lens, and to Gerry Allen, who established contact with Roger and provided us with permission to use the photo.
