Info

Lasaea hinemoa H. J. Finlay, 1928

Although the genus Lasaea has been known for many years and has been the subject of numerous studies, little information is available on the biology of Lasaea hinemoa.Lasaea mussels are almost cosmopolitan, but Lasaea hinemoa appears to be a site-loyal mussel.

One interesting finding is that many genetic studies on this genus indicate that Lasaea species with crawling juvenile stages have a larger geographical range than those with planktotrophic larvae (source: https://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/document?repid=rep1&type=pdf&doi=bca9167a673e4cb7bfbfb33a50ecb16719dbc437).

The small mussel is often found in algae nodules in rock pools:

Color: Dark red to red-brown

Similar species: Lasaea australis (Lamarck, 1818), but Lasaea hinemoa is smaller.
