Aplidium solidum (Ritter & Forsyth, 1917)
The type locality for describing the red sea squirt Aplidium solidum is Tanzania, Pemba Island. The sea squirt was collected there from a depth of 15m. Aplidium solidum was introduced to the Galapagos Islands in the South Pacific (marine region) by ships unintentionally as an attached or free-living fouling organism.
A solid, plate-like colonial squirt. The openings consist of winding lines with lighter spaces between them. The overall color is reddish. The colonies can be 20cm wide and 5cm thick. This sea squirt grows extremely quickly up to 7cm in diameter in 3 months. Aplidium solidum can be found in the tidal clay up to a depth of 157 m on stones in areas with strong currents.
Possibility of confusion: The openings of Eudistoma molle are evenly distributed and do not form meandering lines.
Aplidium solidum is host to the ectoparasite Arthurhumesia canadiensis Bresciani & López-González, 2001.
