Info
Unfortunately, the first description of the species “A revision of the fishes of the family Pempheridae of Japan. Journal of the Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo Section IV Zoology” from 1963 is not available to us, and there are only a few other works on Pempheris xanthoptera.
The available material can be found under “Further links” for those interested.
Dr. John Randall was able to collect an animal species on May 19, 1975 around Miyake-jima, Japan, which had a total length of 14.2 cm.
In 1986 the article “Larvae and Juveniles of Pempheridid Fishes, Pempheris xanthoptera and P. japonica” and a summary of the Pempheris species from 2022 “Report on specimens of the family Pempheridae (Teleostei: Perciformes) deposited in the Department of Zoology, The University Museum, The University of Tokyo” were published.
We are not aware of any photos of living specimens of Pempheris xanthoptera, and as the species is not monitored by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, there is no evidence as to whether this species is still alive or perhaps extinct.
Synonym: Pempheris xanthopterus Tominaga, 1963
