Ocynectes maschalis is only found in Asian waters and here often in very shallow tide pools.

The basic color of the body is greenish grey with numerous irregular dark or white spots on the sides and light grey ventrally without dark spots.
The snout is rather dark, with some whitish or dark irregular spots on the cheeks.

There are three dark saddle-like spots along the dorsal midline, two at the base of the second dorsal fin and one on the caudal peduncle.

The first dorsal fin has six purple and five yellowish, oblique, short bands, with a dark blackish spot between the last three fin rays.
The second dorsal fin has six oblique, purple-colored and five yellowish, oblique bands.
On the anal fin there are three purple and two light yellow bands on each fin ray.
The pectoral fin has five purple and yellowish bands, alternating with a whitish irregular spot at the base.
The pelvic fin is transparent without dark markings, the caudal fin is yellowish with five purple bands on each fin ray, including a fairly broad purple band at the base.
