Info
In live animals, the body is mixed with bright red and silver colors, forming either red spots on a silver background or bright silver reticulations on a red background;
All fins are generally bright red in color with black margins; the bases of the dorsal and anal fins are always silvery; small dark brown or blackish spots on the rear portions of the dorsal and anal fins and the middle portion of the caudal fin.
In the paper Revision of the circumtropical glasseye fish Heteropriacanthus cruentatus (Perciformes: Priacanthidae), with resurrection of two species, we found - contrary to the description - a completely red color morph, see photos below.
About 6 darker spots cross the dorsal area, the first one is unicolored, directly in front of the dorsal fin; the second to sixth evenly distributed on the dorsal area of the body. Dorsal and anal fins with narrow black margins; ventral and caudal fins with wide black margins; and many small black spots on the posterior parts of the dorsal, anal and caudal fins.
Etymology. The specific name comes from the Latin “fulgens”, meaning “shining” or “sparkling”, which may refer to the silvery-white reticulation on the body when alive.
