Info

Myrmekioderma granulatum forms a massive, bulbous, partially buried and with a surface covered by large, round, low, rounded plates that resemble flat tubercles.

Its color is bright orange, while the tubercles are dark red and brownish.
The sponge is fleshy and compressible, its surface appears smooth but is microrough under microscopic magnification.

The members of the class Demospongiae, to which Myrmekioderma granulatum also belongs, are hermaphroditic.
The zygotes develop into free-swimming Parenchymella larvae before settling on a substrate where they grow into a young sponge.
