Chondrosia corticata Thiele, 1900
Chondrosia corticata is a marine sponge that had previously only been reported from the Indo-Pacific.
The marine sponge is known from Ternate (Moluccas) in Indonesia.
In the article “Porifera from Ponta do Ouro (Mozambique)” in the European Journal of Taxonomy, Chondrosia corticata was found for the first time on the east coast of Africa in the western Indian Ocean.
The living sea sponge is characterized by a massive structure with large, protruding oscules. The color varies from dirty white to brown, the exposed sides are darker than other parts. The surface is smooth and often has numerous foreign substances on it.
Sea sponges filter seawater and release excess cells into the sea during the growth phase; these serve as food for other sea creatures.
