Acanella describes a family of deep-sea corals (Keratoisididae) known for their articulated, segmented skeletons, which resemble the growth segments of bamboo plants, hence the names bamboo coral and bamboo coral.
In the initial description, the color of the coral was written as white, but photos from HURL (Hawaiʻi Undersea Research Laboratory Archive) show white corals and also an animal with brownish polyps.
