Pogonoperca punctata prefers clear outer reefs, rarely in Oceania, living in hiding. Sporadic distribution and habitat-specific, prefers large coral pinnacles on slopes with moderate currents. Adults usually in depths of over 20 m; juveniles in shallow lagoons or sheltered bays.
