Info

Ophichthus bonaparti (Kaup, 1856)

The snake eels consist of around 250 species in 52 genera. The name comes from the Greek," ophis" means snake and ichthys means fish.Snake eels live in subtropical and tropical seas in coastal regions, mostly on sandy bottoms. During the day they hide in the sand, Only the head often looks out, at night the predators go out to catch prey. Unlike moray eels, they are not so much tied to a hiding place. Most species eat fish or crustaceans, but some specialize in cephalopods.

Snake eels are similar to moray eels and can be distinguished from them by their front nostrils, which end in downward curved tubes. They often live on shallow sandy bottoms, sometimes with loose seagrass beds.
