A grubfish or sandperch with a large black blotch on the caudal fin, 2-6 oblique brownish bands or dark spots on the lower cheek, whitish rectangular areas enclosing dark spots along the sides, and a series of blackish to brownish spots and ocelli on lower sides.
In Australia, the Blacktail Grubfish has previously been misidentified as Parapercis hexophtalma, which occurs in the Indian Ocean.
