It has a whitish or reddish body with reddish-brown stripes and golden-yellow barbels, depending on the area in which it occurs, and is named for its barbels.
Similar species: Parupeneus moffitti Randall & Myers, 1993.
Currently, four species of Parupeneus are known to occur well below 100 meters depth, they are Parupeneus chrysonemus (Jordan & Evermann, 1903),
from Hawaiii and Johnston Island (20-183 m depth), Parupeneus louise Randall, 2004 from Tuamotu Archipelago (200-250 m), Parupeneus moffitti Randall & Myers, 1993 from Guam, Mariana Islands (120-230 m), and Parupeneus posteli Fourmanoir & Guézé, 1967 from La Réunion (90-250 m).
