Calliactis palliata (Fabricius, 1779)
The mantle sea anemone, the name results from the fact that the anemone, which often settles on snail shells, completely covers the shell with its foot.
The sea anemone is found on muddy and sandy soils. The anemone usually colonizes the shells of the right-handed hermit crab Pagurus prideaux.
The two animals form a symbiosis, a community that has advantages for both animals.
The mobile hermit crab rummages through the substrate and transports nutrients to the actinia, which in turn protects the hermit crab from predators with its cnidocytes.
Due to its color pattern with round purple or red spots on the body, the mantle shrimp can hardly be confused with other sea anemones.
