The squirrelfish Sargocentron marisrubri was described in 2013 from eight Red Sea specimens from the Gulf of Elat (= Gulf of 'Aqaba) and off Port Sudan,
collected at a depth range of 39–49 m. This Squirrelfish is closely related to the wide-ranging, Indo-Pacific Sargocentron melanospilos (Bleeker) which is not known from the Red Sea.
Sargocentron marisrubri occurs in reefs in small aggregations.
