Info
Chromis limbata (Valenciennes, 1833)
Chromis limbata is gray-brown and has a dark dorsal fin, anal fin and distal margin of the caudal fin, with the proximal part being whitish. When spawning, the male develops a light purple coloration as a courtship coloration. Chromis limbata has large eyes and a strong protrusible mouth that extends from the eye to the vertical.
The adult Chromis limbata can be found in rocky reefs and sandy areas covered with seaweed at a depth of 5–45 m. They form pairs for reproduction. The male clears space on the substrate so that the female can lay the eggs there. The eggs stick to the substrate and the male guards and aerates them.
The Azores chromis feeds on small benthic or planktonic invertebrates.
Chromis limbata is a prized food fish in Madeira and is fished on a small scale, particularly off the south and east coasts of the island.
