Adults occur in clear lagoon and seaward reefs, usually seen singly or in loose aggregations near caves and ledges. Abundant over branching corals and leeward coasts.

This species is abundant on outer reef slopes throughout its range. It is not unusual to observe hundreds of individuals during a single dive.
