haetodon melannotus, also known as the Black Back Butterfly Fish is found around the reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans as well as the Red Sea. From East Africa to Samoa, north to southern Japan and south to Lord Howe Island throughout Micronesia. Usually solitary or in pairs in coral-rich areas of reef flats, lagoons, and seaward reefs to a depth of over 15 m. Juveniles often inshore. The Black Black Butterfly Fish can grow to 15 cm (6 Inches).
Chaetodon melannotus is notoriously difficult to keep. It is recommended to try a different member of the family before trying their hand at these.
Soft Corals and most Invertebrates should do fine with the Black Back Butterfly Fish but it may likely feed on octocorallian and scleractinian coral polyps, as they are a part of its natural diet.
Remarks:
Butterflyfish are not recommended for reefs as they will pick at or eat a wide variety of corals, fan worms, and other invertebrates. Most Butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptaisia, a parasitic anemone.
